Sunday also starts with a chill (mid-30s), but that day features full sunshine and a decent afternoon rally back to 60°. The change will be drastic enough to see snowflakes return to the high mountain ski slopes in the morning. We’ll begin in the upper 30s and struggle to the lower 50s this afternoon as sunshine gradually returns. Saturday itself finds us back in the cold air (read “normal” for early March). These winds will remain gusty overnight as well, though gradually subsiding as the hours wear on and this storm system moves farther away. When the winds approach 50 miles-per-hour, power outages are not far behind. As far as the winds are concerned though, gusts approaching 50 miles per hour can occur anywhere, anytime this afternoon through this evening. The fast-moving nature of these storms means that at-most it would be about an hour of inconvenience to make sure you’re in a safe spot during the worst of this event. Consider where your safe place will be, and further to head there before this line of storms crosses. If a Tornado “Watch” is issued for your area this afternoon, it should be a good mental trigger that you are not safe in a mobile home during a tornado event. Folks that live in mobile homes are going to have the most vulnerability today, as there are risks for tornadoes this afternoon. The storms that are expected will be unmistakeable, and can be followed easily as they track to the east.

With the Kentucky statewide tornado drill occurring Wednesday, and the annual remembrance of the 2012 tornado outbreak occurring yesterday, surely the senses are already heightened when it comes to severe weather. Our greatest concern today will be for folks in Eastern Kentucky, as the potential for damaging winds comes alongside risks for hail and even tornadoes. The threat of severe weather is real today, and we’ll be tracking a line of thunderstorms moving swiftly from west to east this afternoon and evening.
Look for winds to approach 50 miles per hour later today region-wide, potentially higher in the stronger storms. When we have this kind of contrast across the Tri-State, gusty winds are often not far behind. Not everyone will be warm though temperatures will spike as high as the 70s in Eastern Kentucky, folks in the West Virginia mountains to the east may not even get out of the 40s. The extra warmth the Sun will provide helps destabilize the air, adding fuel for the storms that will advance later today.
It’s easy for folks to consider the appearance of sunshine and mild air a great thing a Friday afternoon, but this day they’d be wrong. Breaking clouds and partial sunshine will help turn temperatures around from the dull 40s to the 50s and 60s quickly by midday.
